Townsend reveals why he celebrated like Ronaldo after scoring against Man Utd
Andros Townsend, the Everton winger, has explained why he copied the iconic Cristiano Ronaldo celebration, after scoring against Manchester United on Saturday.
The Red Devils went in front thanks to a goal from Anthony Martial, with Ronaldo starting from the bench.
However, Townsend finished off a beautiful counterattack in the second half, to make it 1-1.
Ronaldo failed to make an impact when he came on, as United remain winless in three league games. But Townsend has now spoken of the 36-year-old’s influence in his career.
He said: “It’s just a mark of respect to a guy who influenced my career.
“I spent many hours on the training pitch and in the video room trying to analyze his free-kicks and his stepovers and the way he dedicated himself to football.
“So it wasn’t an imitation it was a mark of respect to one of my idols. I probably didn’t do the celebration justice and didn’t execute it properly.”
