Reps give directive to immigration on passport production review
The Ministry of Interior and Nigeria Immigration Service have been asked by the House of Representatives to review their agreement with passport producers.
The lawmakers asked them to review the existing agreements with the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company Plc and IRIS Smart Technologies Ltd to increase capacity to produce.
Furthermore, the green chamber also gave NIS 72 hours to clear existing backlogs of passports.
These resolutions were the outcome of a motion moved by Ugonna Ozurigbo on Thursday at the plenary.
The lawmaker in his motion said lack of ‘booklet’ at passport office is causing untold hardship for Nigerians.
He added that a process that ought to be seamless is causing strain on people.
“Nigerians who have applied for International Passports and fulfilled all the requirements are constrained to wait endlessly for their International Passports.”
House Committees on Foreign Affairs and Interior were mandated by the House to ensure compliance with the resolutions.
