Dolores Aveiro, the mother of Cristiano Ronaldo, has accused what she described as a “football mafia” for her son’s failure to win the Ballon D’Or.
Recall that presently Ronaldo is equal on five Ballon D’Or prizes with the Argentine super star, Lionel Messi.
The Juventus and Portuguese star player could not win the sixth trophy last year, instead he finished second to ex-Real Madrid team-mate Luka Modric.
But speaking with the Portuguese press, Dolores said, “There is a mafia. That’s the right word to define it. Yes, there is a mafia in football.
“If there wasn’t a football mafia, my son would have more [individual] international trophies. If you see everything that happened, you will realize that it is the mafia.
“If he was Spanish or English they would not do what they did to him. But since he’s Portuguese and from Madeira… well, this happens.”
Already in the run for this year’s award are: Ronaldo, Messi, Liverpool stars Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and others.
