Klopp hails Liverpool star after win against Leicester
Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool boss, has hailed his ‘outstanding goalkeeper’ Caoimhin Kelleher after the Reds beat Leicester City on penalties in the Carabao Cup quarter-final on Wednesday night.
The goalkeeper saved spot-kicks from Luke Thomasand Ryan Bertrand to help Jurgen Klopp’s side progress to the semi-finals after the full-time ended 3-3.
He also made some outstanding saves in normal time before the penalty shootout.
The Irishman, who is the club’s second-choice goalkeeper, has regularly impressed at any given chances in cup competitions and rare opportunities in the Premier League.
“Yeah, of course it’s important,’ Klopp said of the two penalty saves.
“But he is an outstanding goalkeeper. I don’t want to say anymore he’s a ‘talent.’
“For goalies maybe it’s possible because they are talented a bit longer, because they can play longer. But he is an outstanding goalie; with his feet, game understanding, all the goalie skills.
“John [Achterberg] and Jack [Robinson] over the years did an incredible job with the boy, it’s really outstanding.
“Of course it’s nice. It’s not the first time he was part of these spectacular games, against Arsenal [in 2019] it was similar. But now he is even a step further. Like I said, he saved our life, was really helpful tonight.”
Jamie Vardy fired Leicester in front with a double after just 13th minute, then the Reds went 3-1 behind at half-time.
But Diogo Jota and Takumi Minamino second half efforts ensured the match entered penalty shootout with Kelleher emerging the hero of the night.
Liverpool will now face Arsenal in the semi final of the cup competition, while Chelsea, who managed to get a narrow victory against Brentford will face their former manager Antonio Conte and his Tottenham side.
