Goalkeeper Oblak gives verdict on Atletico Madrid’s defeat to Man City
Jan Oblak, the Atletico goalkeeper, has given his verdict on his side’s elimination from the Champions League quarter-final stage at the hands of Manchester City on Wednesday.
Oblak was unable to save his team from losing against Man City over the two-leg ties.
Atletico Madrid drew goalless with Man City in the Champions League last-8 quarter-final second leg tie in Spain.
The LaLiga champions had lost 1-0 to Pep Guardiola’s side in the first leg at Etihad last week.
Speaking at his post-match press conference, Oblak said it was a shame for his team to lose against Man City, adding that it was painful because Atletico deserved a better result.
He said: “What a shame not to go through. It’s painful. I really think we had a good game. We deserved a better result.
“We gave our all, we might have won. In the first match, they were much better than us – in this game, we were much better. Across the two matches, we had more goal chances than them, but it wasn’t sufficient. The support from our fans was incredible. They helped us hugely.
“I’m left wondering what we might have achieved if we would have made it to an extra 30 minutes. There is nothing to reproach ourselves for. We gave it our all. If we play to tonight’s level from now on, we will do well.”
