Exchange of fire at Owerri Correctional Centre, inmates set free

There was serious exchange of fire at the Owerri Correctional Centre which lasted for a long time, during the early morning of Easter Monday between the security officers at the complex and unidentified hoodlums who later set part of the centre on fire, freeing some inmates.

Many people have confessed to AmbosyMediaInfo of hearing the sound of the guns throughout the period it lasted.

It was gathered that the hoodlums took advantage of the calm atmosphere of Easter to invade the place at the wee hours of Monday.

Recall that this happened despite the fact that the state Commissioner of Police, Nasiru Mohammed said that he had deployed over 4760 personnel to ensure maximum security during and after the Easter celebration.

In fact, before the centre was bombed, our correspondent gathered that the sporadic shooting was heard by people living in many parts of Owerri.

At the moment residents of the town and commuters who ply the Okigwe road are apprehensive of the situation.
