Ex-presidential candidate, other protesters arrested during new year protest

Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate, has been arrested for protesting.
It was gathered that Sowore was arrested in company of other activists during a protest against the Nigerian government in the early hours of Friday, January 1, 2021.
The protest which was carried out in Abuja indicated, according to Sahara Reporters, indicated that police officers attacked and arrested the protesters during a peaceful procession to mark the New Year.
An activist, Deji Adeyanju while confirming Sowore’s arrest called on the police to release him.
In his tweet, he wrote: “PROTEST can never be a crime in a democracy, tyrant Buhari free Sowore now.”
Sowore before his reported arrest had on his Twitter page called for a nationwide crossover protest against President Buhari’s government.
His tweet had read: “How about a Cross Over Protest/Uprising tonight? Anyone willing to participate?”
