Disease outbreak in Sokoto leads to school closure as many are hospitalised

The Sokoto State Government has ordered the closure of the Government Girls College, Sokoto with immediate effect, following the outbreak of gastroenteritis which led to the death of two students and hospitalisation of 70.  

Hajia Kulu Abubakar, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, made this known on Friday.

Speaking at a press briefing, the Commissioner said Governor Aminu Tambuwal gave the order for the school’s closure.

Accoding to her, “When the ministry got wind of the outbreak of the disease, we immediately contacted the Ministry of Health, and the timely intervention of the ministry manifested in reducing the death rate, else it could have been more than two”.

Hajia Abubakar further disclosed that the Ministry of Water Resources would ensure the provision of potable water to all schools in the state.
