Details of the discussions Nigeria held with the United States in the area of relations and recent developments have emerged.

Antony Blinken, the Secretary of State spoke with Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama to highlight the importance his country places on the bond with Nigeria.

Ned Price, the State Department spokesperson made details of the conversation public.

During the discussions, the U.S. acknowledged the threats that terrorists pose to Nigerian and regional security.

The Secretary of State welcomed Buhari’s appointment of Service Chiefs to combat terrorism in the Northeast and provide national security.

He made reference to President Joe Biden’s revocation of immigrant visa restrictions as affirmation of the close ties between Americans and Nigerians.

Blinken further outlined a holistic approach to the U.S. – Nigeria partnership “based on our shared values of democracy, respect for human rights, and robust people-to-people relations”.

He reiterated America’s support for Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala as the new Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
