Del Piero identifies player who helped Real Madrid beat Chelsea at Bernabeu
Alessandro del Piero, a Juventus legend, has identified Luka Modric as the player who helped Real Madrid beat Chelsea to qualify for the Champions League semi-final.
Real Madrid lost 3-2 to Chelsea in the Champions League quarter-final second leg tie at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night.
But the Los Blancos qualified for the Champions League last-4 on a 5-4 aggregate win, having won the first leg 3-1 at Stamford Bridge last week.
And Del Piero believes Modric was the player who changed the second leg tie against Chelsea for Real Madrid, adding that the 36-year-old was extraordinary.
Modric played a huge role in their comeback as the Croatia international laid a brilliant cross for Rodrygo to score in the 86th minute during the encounter.
Speaking of Modric, Del Piero told Sky Sports Italia: “We missed nothing tonight, it was an exceptional game. He’s the player who changed the game. Modric did everything.
“Tonight was unique and strange. Chelsea seemed in control, but then it changed again and we had the feeling that the game could go to a penalty shootout. It was an incredible game. We have known each other for a long time. I was happy to meet him, he’s an extraordinary footballer.”
He added, “We didn’t talk for long. He breathed a sigh of relief. He was aware they were in trouble. I just told him: ‘Look, you did everything on your own, my friend, just enjoy it!”
