Conte identifies best team in Europe, world, issues warning as Chelsea defeat Tottenham
Antonio Conte, the Tottenham Hotspur manager, has identified Chelsea as one of the best teams in Europe and the world.
Conte also warned that he could not wave a magic wand to improve Tottenham’s fortunes in the current transfer window.
The former Inter Milan coach said this while reacting to his side’s Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg 2-0 defeat against Chelsea on Wednesday night.
Conte believes his team was outplayed by a superior Chelsea side at Stamford Bridge.
Tottenham’s hopes of winning the Carabao Cup took a big hit as Kai Havertz’s goal and an own goal from Ben Davies gave Chelsea the first-leg advantage ahead of the second leg.
“It was a difficult game, difficult from the start, Chelsea showed to be much better than us,” Conte told Sky Sports.
“The first half, we struggled a lot from the start, but we know that we are talking about one of the best teams in Europe, in the world, last season they won the Champions League. If you compare the two teams, there is no comparison.
“We are talking about a team ready to win – today we have seen the difference between the two teams. “It’s not easy to play at Stamford Bridge, the way they were very concentrated, they won the ball every time and then we also conceded a goal. We were unlucky.
“But, I know the situation, it is very clear at this moment there is an important gap. We’ve to try to fight to stay in the league in a good position, but if we think we’re close, I think we aren’t in the right way.”
Conte added: “Honestly, I also want to be very clear because if we think, with the transfer window in January, we solve the situation, I am telling you a lie, not the truth.
“There is a lot of work to do. If someone thinks the transfer market can solve the situation… First of all, in January it is very difficult to buy. Very, very difficult. Then you’ve to see if there’s the possibility to buy players that you need.”
