Austrian man preserves late mother’s body to continue receiving her benefits
An Austrian man has been discovered to have mummified his mother’s corpse for over a year to keep receiving her benefits.
AFP report indicated that the Austrian Police found the body of an 89-year-old woman mummified and preserved in the cellar for more than a year as her son continued to receive the benefits.
The woman, who suffered from dementia, died in June last year and her 66-year-old son lived with the body at their residence in the Tyrol region of Austria.
During questioning, the man admitted that after her death, he froze the body with icepacks and kept it in the basement to stop the smell from spreading. He also wrapped the corpse in bandages to prevent fluids from emanating.
He also covered the body with cat litter and mummified it, said the police. The accused told his brother that their mother was in the hospital.
He had received 50,000 (Rs 43.4 lakh) over the past year as benefits the woman was entitled to and had been receiving the monthly payments. However, a new postman demanded to see the beneficiary recently, which he refused.
This led the postman to report the incident to the authorities, which in turn brought out the corpse stuffed in the basement, said the AFP report.
The man has now been accused of benefit fraud and hiding a corpse.
